LaToysha’s connection to the Freedom Project Network began as a student at the Sunflower County Freedom Project in the Mississippi Delta. She later studied sociology at the University of Southern Mississippi, focusing on criminal justice reform, equitable education, and Black studies. During college, she returned to the Rosedale Freedom Project as a Teacher Advisor, where she launched a Restorative Justice Club focused on self-advocacy, peer mediation, and community healing. She also co-created programming that empowered Fellows to research issues and take action in their communities. From 2018 to 2022, she served on the RFP Board of Directors. Before becoming Executive Director, she taught Global Justice at Abramson Sci Academy in New Orleans and helped design a social studies curriculum aligned with the 1619 Project. Outside of work, she is a spoken-word artist known as Nina Shakur and enjoys live music and Beyoncé. Inspired by Nina Simone and Assata Shakur, she is passionate about people working together to transform their communities and fight for freedom.
